Homemade Almond Milk

Warning: DO NOT attempt this recipe if you want to be able to enjoy store bought almond milk, but continue reading if you want to enjoy a creamy and delicious, vanilla almond milk.

Although you'll need to plan ahead for this recipe by soaking the almonds in water overnight (or for at least 7 hours), I've linked an easy and quick alternative if you're running out of time here from Laura Wright's The First Mess Cookbook.

Ingredients List:

  1. 1 cup almonds (soaked overnight)
  2. 1/2 tsp table salt
  3. 1 tsp cinnamon
  4. 1/2 tbsp vanilla
  5. 1 tbsp maple syrup or 4 medjool dates

Kitchen Utensils:

  1. High-Powered Blender: I use a Blendtec
  2. Nut Milk Bag: I got this one from Rawsome Creations off Amazon
  3. Wide Bowl
  4. Milk Container

  1. Place soaked almonds in high-powered blender (see my suggestions below) with 4 cups cold water
  2. Blend on high-speed or "juice setting" for roughly 1 minute
  3. Pour mixture into nut bag to strain out pulp into bowl by slowly squeezing out liquid
  4. Either discard pulp into garbage or freeze and save to use for pie crusts or other baked goods
  5. Pour almond milk back into blender and add remaining ingredients
  6. Pulse on high for roughly 20 seconds
  7. Voila! Your Almond Milk is complete. Just pour into storage container and serve chilled.

#TheSundaySeries: Summer Sneakers

Summer Sneakers

We're back again with another #TheSundaySeries and thanks to Angela's response to our last edition, we're talking all about Summer Sneakers. The summer season is just around the corner and there's nothing more exciting than swapping out boots for fun footwear;  hello bare ankles! Everyone has seen how the athleisure trend has taken over and moving into the summer months we want to make sure that your sneaker game is on point to round out your outfits!

We've put together our favorite platform, slides, white, and athleisure sneakers that will look great with jeans, jean shorts and a t-shirt or if you're heading to your spin class. Make sure to check out all of the shopable links below and let us know what you add to your collection in the comments below!

Platform Fashion Sneakers

We're bringing it back to the days of the Spice Girls and jumping on the platform sneaker trend. Not only are they comfortable to walk around in on the weekends, they also add a little something extra to any outfit.

Slide Sneakers

A mixture of a slide and a sneaker? Yes please!! We are all about this slip on trend which is perfect for heading to a boutique fitness or spin class where you can kick them off and be ready to go.

White Sneakers

It's no secret that white sneakers are all the rage and in our opinion, white is acceptable 365 days a year! We've tried to link a few styles that aren't just your typical ADIDAS Superstars if you're looking to mix things up for summer.

Athleisure Sneakers

Last but not least, we've collected some true athleisure sneakers that you can do some light training in. These are the most functional of the bunch. Pepper is constantly in her ADIDAS Tubulars (picture above) and they are perfect for walking to work, heading to Core40, or just kicking around on the weekend.

Let us know what you want to see coming up on #TheSundaySeries. Stay tuned for next weekend with our upcoming installment about Easter.

March Favorites

Kiehl's Heat-Protective Silk Straightening Cream
Pepper: I mentioned this product in our Health Hair Sunday Series post a few weeks ago but it deserves another shout out! I incorporated this heat protectant into my hair routine in late February and have been obsessed with it. It has made my blowouts straighter, shinier, and they are lasting even longer than they used to.

Skin Care Favorites
Piper: This month I've focused a lot of my favorites on beauty. There is no better investment than your health, and that is directly correlated to my happiness. For me, having clear and beautiful skin makes me confident, happy, and ready to take on the day! Unfortunately, I also become victim to occasional chin break-outs and excessively dry skin during the harsh winter months. The cold and my skin just don't get along! I recently found out about La Roche Posay, a skincare line that is recommended by dermatologists for sensitive skin. I've linked my favourite products so far below! One trick I picked up from my last visit to a dermatologist, is to immediately apply moisturizer after "towel-patting" post shower. This way, your moisturizer can pick up the remaining water droplets from the shower and use to hydrate your skin.

Linked below are my other favourite products from March. I stumbled upon Revlon Kiss, and for under $10 dollars, it gives just the right amount of colour and shine to finish an everyday look. The Origins Charcoal mask to clear pores, is a much more gentle alternative to the YouTube craze of charcoal peel-off masks.

ADIDAS Tubular Shadow Sneakers
Pepper: I've been loving my new ADIDAS Tubular sneakers! I had been wearing my Vince Blair 5 sneakers throughout the winter and was ready for a change. These sneaks are definitely more on the athleisure side of casual but work for my everyday (casual) life in SF.

Puffer Jackets
Piper: This March in Toronto has been a ebb and flow of weather, and I'm so thankful for having an array of puffer jackets to help navigate the right amount of coverage. Mine are from earlier seasons of Zara (similar here), but my sights are set on something a bit more technical and fashion forward. I've linked a few of my options and a few are on sale!

IKEA HEMNES Full Length Mirror
Pepper: If you follow us on Instagram, you'll have already seen my IKEA HEMNES mirror. I was lucky enough to snag this mirror from a friend when she was moving out of town earlier this year and it has been a welcome additional to my little studio. A mirror is a great way to make a small space look bigger and not to mention this one is amazing for taking full length outfit pics! This mirror is a steal from IKEA at only $99 and comes in white (pictured) and a nice deep brown. The majority of the other decor and knickknacks in my place are from Target.

Piper: This month, I have perfected a homemade almond recipe (post to come this week!). This has taken my tea and latté game to a new level. Part of that perfection starts with having great kitchen appliances. I turn to my Breville Milk Cafe and Breville Variable Temperature Kettle. Until recently, I didn't know that different types of teas (green, white, oolong and black) need to be brewed at different temperatures and if neglected, can actually produce a burnt taste! Enter the Breville.

I Got Baked In San Francisco

I'm lucky enough to live within a 5 minute walk of one of San Francisco's most famous bakeries, Mr. Holmes Bakehouse. This bakery is most well known for their neon sign installation (pictured above) and their delicious baked goods. Their Cruffins (a delicious croissant/muffin creation) are ready at between 8AM and 11AM daily. They have a weekly curated flavor list that gets posted to their Instagram every Monday morning.

Beyond the famous Cruffin, they have other delicious baked goods ranging from savory to sweet to satisfy everyone's cravings. The jelly filled doughnuts are amazing and I'm a sucker for any one of their croissants. On this trip, I just went with a plain old chocolate croissant which did not disappoint. If you're looking to score one of their boxes, you need 6 items which will run you about $25-$30.

Mr. Holmes keeps their coffee on the simple side with drip coffee but still delicious. The coffee cups and sleeves add just the right touch for some great photos. If you're in the mood for a latte or specialty drink with your baked goods, Jane on Larkin is just down the street.

Mr. Holmes is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. The best time to go is early Monday through Wednesday; there tends to be less of a line and a full selection of treats. If you're in it for the 'gram, you'll be able to get some good pictures too instead of weekends which are insane. If you're in it for the Cruffin, you'll likely get your hands on one during the week, but on weekends ensure you're lined up well before opening to get your hands on one of their coveted 'guaranteed' Cruffin stickers.

Make sure you get 'baked' if you head to San Francisco this summer. Check Mr. Holmes out on Yelp! and Instagram

#TheSundaySeries: All Wrapped Up

I came across these Stuart Weitzman ankle wrap sandals on the Nordstrom website and instantly fell in love. The more I browsed online, I kept seeing amazing ankle wrap sandals that are clearly on-trend for spring/summer 2017! This style is a great alternative to the traditional (slightly overdone) summer wedge sandal with most of the heeled options having block heels for added comfort. Think about styling them with either cropped frayed bottom jeans or those transitional spring days or a flowy summer dress when we really get into the heat of thins. Come on July! I'm excited to try out this new trend this season and with less than 3 days before the Spring Equinox I can't think of a better purchase to start the season off right! Make sure to check out my shopable favorites below!
